PostSubject: working on 1975 RD350   working on 1975 RD350 EmptyWed May 22 2019, 02:13

Picked up 1975 RD 350 B that was sitting ten years or so. Rebuilt carbs & fuel petcock replaced all fuel lines\ filters and oil pump lines. Cleaned points, new battery, bled oil pump and lines & rebuilding master cylinder and caliper so far. Went to start bike and was not getting fuel had to pull carbs again realized I had floats upside down. When I put carbs back on second time it went easier and I did a better job with fuel lines vents oil hoses so i was not upset to take them off. The bike ran pretty good then I adjusted the pilot jet and throttle stop screw. In the HAYNES manual that I have it says to do one cylinder at a time started with turn and three quarter out on pilot ended up turning in to 1.5 think it ran better there? Is that richer or leaner? book said adjust to where you notice a difference? So I think it ran better there at a turn and a half. Manuals always leave out a little info no pic's showing how over flow lines and vents are ran on bike. Was looking for pic's on battery leads because they where missing. I was a little difficult finding right size lines for oil pump not listed in manual. Anyone know what compression that motor should have? Another question adjuster on clutch handle almost all the way out so I went to tighten adjuster on case and that was all ready turned in all the way. do you think cable is bad or clutch almost done? The bike is all stock. Any way would appreciate any help or thoughts on bike thanksworking on 1975 RD350 Img_4010

Screwing in is Richer since you are blocking off more air.. You are better to look out for a different manual, or just ask on the Forums. Haynes are notoriously poor on accuracy, many riders liken them to doorstops..

Thanks Wolfie what is your technique when adjusting pilot screw? Go by ear, plug chop, riding down the road ? I have not been able to blast down road yet waiting on papers. I still need to do a bunch of work I have a old air filter in it not to good. Need to check position of needle. etc etc

You should be able to feel the difference if it is way out.

If it is too weak it will stall when you try to set off needing revs and clutch slipping to move off.

If it is too rich it will stutter when you are setting off.

The recommended way of setting the airscrew is to back off the cable so there is some slack, turn the tickover down a little on the other cylinder so that the cylinder you are adjusting is the strongest, then adjust the airscrew for a peak in the tickover.

the yamaha workshop manual is freely available for download in pdf and so is the clymer manual
just google it

i never really bothered getting my pilot screws set correctly because if these bikes are ridden the way they were designed then you will be full throttle (wot) with a police car chasing you.

there is a forum over your side of the water that used to be a great place to seek help for aircooled yamaha 350's

http://www.2strokeworld.net/forum/index.php/

the turning wrenches forum is where you can ask any questions and get answers. some of the best authorities in the world on yam 350's visit there.
it did lose a lot of its archives a few years back but its still usefull
