Thanks Rob,
“The Mermaid” is a Spondon/Len Manchester World TT F1 Yamaha RD500 that was ridden by Brian Reid in the 1985 World TT F1 Championship.
The bike was built by Arnie Fletcher & Robin Church.
The engine is a heavily modified RD500 motor.
The rules for the Championship were road based engines either 500cc 2 stroke or 750cc 4 strokes. The original crankcases & cylinders had to be used. The engine modifications are a work of art.
This was also one of the bikes that were on the “Tornamona” Joey Dunlop’s Fishing boat that sank in Strangford Lough.
This bike did race all that year completing the full TT F1 season. However the rules were changed at the end of 1985 allowing 4 strokes to use 1,000cc engines so the 500cc 2 strokes weren’t competitive anymore so it was retired.
I take it to the Classic TT for the Parade Lap and a few other Parades, so it dose get used.
I am currently restoring a Bimota YB3.
Best regards
Johnny C.
