machine turning down a crankpin Empty
PostSubject: machine turning down a crankpin   machine turning down a crankpin EmptyWed Jun 03 2020, 13:41

ive given my obsolete crankshaft plus modern day conrod to as pal and the new crankpin needs turning down at the ends from 20mm to 18.4 to fit the hole in the webs
he is on his third attempt at turning the crankpin down and seems to me to be struggling

can anyone recommend a machinist who can do this very accurately so that the crank when re assembled is bang on true?

and also one thats only gonna charge me no more that £50 ish?

ta

Graham Salter at Diptune in Batley does the engineering for Padgetts.. 01924 440562.

He's a specialist for undercutting gear dogs and can also eat broken studs etc out of their holes with Electricity..

He gets my thumbs up for any engine engineering...

cheers wolfie. ill give him a ring

this is an ultra precision bit of work on very hard material
the crank ends have to be true when assembled to no more than 0.01mm
any errors in the crank pin will be magnified ten fold if not more
i dont know if it is even possible

ill see what he says
Thumbs up

Yeh, give him a ring, he's a good engineer and talker too... Turned out he's an old bikey friend of my missus from the 70s..

rang a few times but no reply,
googling graham salter batley shows hes an ex racer who got done speeding 124mph 2001 and also got done for health and safety cos some woman helping out in his workshop her glove got caught in a machine and messed her arm

now i speed often and i am a great believer of taking women by the arm now and then and given a good drilling

so he IS my kind of guy.

ill try ringing again a few minutes before full moon tonight at midnight because being a friend of yours he may in actual fact be a werewolf.

It needs surface grinding Al. Had a hardened clutch spacer ground down to accept off the shelf needle roller bearings a couple of years back. It was an engineering place on Cannon St opposite Caroline St (cant remember the name). Cost me £60 and most of the cost was for making up a mandrel to fit the spacer in the grinder. Once they have the mandrel made any subsequent spacers would have been half price. Sadly I only wanted one. Came out perfect to.
